Balmer Jr., Rowe Albert - Shallotte  
Rowe Albert Balmer Jr., 73, of Shallotte, died Thursday, April 28, 2016, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Rowe was born Nov. 2, 1942, in Detroit, a son of the late Rowe A. Balmer Sr. and Mary Lee Vail Balmer. Rowe, known to family and friends as Buzz, played football for the University of Vermont before moving on to the University of Michigan, where he obtained his undergraduate degree. He went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his law degree and a master's in accounting. Buzz's interests included golf, traveling, sports and family. He will be remembered as U of M's biggest fan! Surviving are his beloved wife, Jane; and his five children, Julie Hughes (Michael), Wendy Patterson (Rick), Brad Balmer (Patricia), George McAvity (Michelle) and Lindsey Bertrand (Darren). He is survived by his two sisters, Su Reed and Sarah Balmer-Stott (Steve). Buzz was the proud grandfather of 11 fabulous grandchildren, Tommy and Haley Hughes, Ryan, Regan and Evan Patterson, Rowe, Hagen and Mairenn Balmer, Jenna McAvity and Libby and Kate Bertrand. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in the Brunswick Funeral Service chapel by the Rev. Jason L. Benton. The family will welcome family and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home, 5229 Ocean Highway W., Shallotte. A donation may be made to Fisher House, 111 Rockville Pike Suite 420, Rockville, MD, 20850, in lieu of flowers. Reception to follow at the River's Edge Golf Club. Birnie, Beverly Abel - Apache Junction  
Beverly Abel Birnie, previously from Calabash, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Apache Junction, Ariz. Beverly was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Verona, N.Y., the daughter of the late George H. and Blanche Abel. Beverly is survived by her children, Bradley of Rome, N.Y., Martin of Concord, Calif., Sherry Sampson of Renton, Wash., and Tracy Birnie of Gold Canyon Ariz.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, George H. Abel; and sister, Deborah Armstrong. In August the family will hold a private memorial service in Rome, N.Y.

Blake, Earl Dudley "Radar" - Ocean Isle Beach  
Earl Dudley "Radar" Blake, 74, of Ocean Isle Beach, formerly of Greensboro, died Monday, May 16, 2016, in McLeod Seacoast Medical Center, Little River, S.C. Radar was born March 16, 1942, in Guilford County, a son of Irene Coble Blake and the late Clarence Blake. Mr. Blake was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a licensed captain and his passions involved fishing and woodworking. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy Blake; three daughters, Amy Blake, of Greensboro, Wendy Mills (Blaine), of Greensboro and Anita Moore (Kevin), of Calabash; three beloved grandchildren, Zachery Kinley, Sydney Mills, and Levi Moore; and three brothers, Gary Blake (Lorene), of North Wilkesboro, Harold Blake (Judith), of Greensboro, and Wayne Blake (Diane), of Little Elm, Texas. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Brunswick Funeral Service chapel by the Rev. Joel Long. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
