Ard, Carlton Gerald "Jerry" - 3. Brunswick  
Monday, April 6, 2015, God wrapped his loving arms around Carl Gerald "Jerry" Ard and took him home with him. Jerry was born in Scranton, S.C. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. Jerry was a dedicated civil servant, serving 42 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, working to protect the flying public, by testing and approving advanced air traffic control systems. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; sister, Judy Hanna; stepson, Scott Reid; son, Jay Ard; daughter, Patty Ard; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jerry was truly loved and will be missed. May he rest in peace. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 24, at the Calabash Covenant Presbyterian Church, 8820 Old Georgetown Road, Sunset Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Committee to Honor America's Veterans (Brunswick County). Checks should be sent in care of Lt. Col. Baxley, Merle - Indian Trail  
Merle Baxley, 77, of Indian Trail, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, April 25, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Lora Stephens. She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church. In her earlier years she enjoyed serving as a board member for The Miss Charlotte Mecklenburg Pageant Association and traveling throughout the state volunteering her time judging various pageants and providing mentorship to young women. She wasn't bashful about sharing her conservative political views and debating various issues. Later in life she enjoyed outings with her chapter of The Red Hats Club and also RVing adventures with her husband and friends in Florida and Texas, as well as going on cruises. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, David Baxley; two daughters, Gena Baxley and Marla Caray and husband, Jay Mutina; two siblings, Taft Stephens and Elois Bass; and three granddogs, Indy, Ellie and Otis. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Heritage Funeral Home Indian Trail Chapel with Ron Hannah and Joe McCombs officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to a charity of your choice. Bennett, Charlene Marie (Varnam) - Shallotte  
Charlene Marie Varnam Bennett, 50, of Shallotte, died Friday, April 17, 2015. She was preceded in death by her father, Hoyal (Red) Varnam. She is survived by her mother, Delores Clemmons Varnam Strong of Supply; her two sons, Taylor and Colin Bennett; one grandchild; and her life partner, Richard Morris. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 25, at Grace Missionary Baptist Church, 340 Mulberry St., Shallotte, with the Rev. Ivan Cortez officiating. The family will receive visitors at 11 a.m. at the church.

Bowden, Bruce - Calabash  
Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Bruce Bowden, 86, of Calabash, died Friday, April 17, 2015. He was born Dec. 13, 1928, to the late Clarence and Zilpha Bowden and raised in Waltham, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Linda Stewart Bowden; four daughters, Bonnie Miller of Frisco, Texas, Diana Guidry of Cooper City, Fla., Robin Floyd of Fairmont, and Vicki White of Dacula, Ga.; one son, Steven Bowden of Conyers, Ga.; two stepsons, Doug Stewart of Hampton, Ga., and Joe Stewart of Powder Springs, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Monday afternoon, April 20, at Seaside United Methodist Church in Sunset Beach, with a reception afterward in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seaside United Methodist Church, 1300 Seaside Road, Sunset Beach, NC 28468. Britt, Frances - Lumberton  
Frances Britt, age 68, of Lumberton, passed Sunday, April 19, 2015, at her residence. She was born in Lumberton on Oct. 15, 1946, to the late George Ross Huggins Jr. and Eleanor Walters Lindsay. She worked as a tax specialist for H&R Block. She was president of United Methodist Women at Asbury United Methodist. The group was very active in feeding the hungry. She also was a liturgist and former choir member. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Lee Britt Sr.; and a son, Carlton Lee Britt Jr. Mrs. Britt is survived by a son, David Troy Britt (Vanessa) of Lumberton; a daughter, Wendy Shook (Andy) of Lumberton; a brother, Thomas Lindsay (June) of Burgaw; sisters, Jo Ellen Hickmon (Ed) of Hampstead, Betty Arnette (Tom) of Shallotte, Tudie Boyles (Jim) of Thomasville, Kim Feltes (John) of Mt. Pleasant, and Lisa La Prade (Jim) of Greensboro; and eight grandchildren, Justin Meares, Zachary Britt, Madison Meares, Kaylan Britt, Hannah Shook, Kali Britt, Alexis Britt, and Ryan Britt. A time for visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc., 809 East 5th St. in Lumberton. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Floyd Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Chip Bass officiating. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton. Bryant, Ethel Bernard - Roanoke  
Ethel Bernard Bryant, 79, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Bolivia, died Friday, May 1, 2015, at Friendship Manor Retirement Facility in Roanoke. Mrs. Bryant is survived by two daughters, Margo Hill and Artelia Bryant-Robins, both of Roanoke; one son, Hugo Bryant Sr. of Bolivia; and one brother, Herman Dawson of Bolivia. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 2586 Old Ocean Highway, Bolivia. Burial will follow at Riley Hewett Cemetery in Supply. Eichorn, Jason - 3. Brunswick  
Jason Eichorn passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, early Monday, April 27, 2015, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, at the age of 51. Jason is survived by his mother, Lorraine Eichorn of Town Creek; wife, Deborah Eichorn; and son, Thomas Eichorn of Town Creek; as well as his sister, Melissa Lewis (Dary) of Town Creek. He is preceded in death by his father, James Eichorn of Town Creek. Jason was born Feb. 12, 1964, in Wilmington to James and Lorraine Eichorn. He graduated from South Brunswick High School in 1982 with an abundance of credits in lunch and physical education. He married the love of his life, Deborah Eichorn, September 1989. The couple welcomed their little miracle, Thomas Eichorn, in January 1997. Jason was a devoted husband and father who loved his family. He was an exceptional friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid hunter and lover of the Washington Redskins. Jason had a laugh that could infect a room of people instantly. He could often be found laughing and making jokes. He retired after serving proudly for 23 years as a member of the Army and National Guard. Jason was a highly decorated marksman including a National Championship title. Jason enjoyed coaching baseball and creating a lasting impact on the team members. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at Sacred heart Catholic Church in Southport, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jason's life. The family requests that those who wish to visit with the family in the days prior to the funeral service to please visit at the home of Jason's mother, Lorraine Eichorn. Gilreath, Virginia "Tillie" (Nordmann) - Charlotte  
Virginia Nordmann "Tillie" Gilreath, a native of Charlotte, and a resident of Ocean Isle Beach, died Friday, April 24, 2015, in hospice care in Wilmington. Born June 13, 1930, Virginia "Tillie" was the eldest of 14 children born to Virginia and Richard Nordmann of Queens Road West. She attended Lenoir Rhyne College. She was married to the late Edwin Gilreath of Charlotte and they had a daughter, "the delight of her life," Debra Gilreath Morgan of Charlotte. Virginia lived a full and happy life. She earned her pilot's license and was checked out on twin-engine airplanes. She would fly in one of her three airplanes in the Powder Puff Derbies, The Angel Derby and the Air Race Classic. She received two safety awards for outstanding safe flying by the A.O.P.A. She was on the board of directors of the North Carolina-area flying club. She served as vice chairman, secretary and news reporter for her 99 Lady Pilot's Chapter of the International Organization. She was also a charter member of the Blue Ridge Chapter, The 99s, an elite group of 7,000 women pilots, the Piedmont Carolina Flying Club and the Arrow Flying Club and, a member of the Lions Club of Calabash. Virginia was an accomplished pianist, an avid boater and at the time of her death had completed half of her autobiography. She loved "investigating the facts" and wrote copious, newsy letters to family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Debra G. Morgan; her son-in-law, Bob Morgan; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her siblings, Shirley N. Hill of Matthews, Jeanette N. Lee, Linda N. Smith of Charlotte, Frieda N. Porter of Atlanta, Paul Nordmann, Henry Nordmann of Conway, S.C., and Ronnie Nordmann of Summerton, S.C.; and scores of nieces and nephews. Virginia stated the greatest moment in life came when she committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. She said her faith, the Bible and prayer are all anyone needs to have peace of mind. As she took her last breath, her daughter and sisters were singing to her, "Jesus Loves Me." The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Park Road, Charlotte. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the same location. Her internment will be at Forest Lawn West at 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte.
