Donald F. Gates, 75, of Ash, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, in the SECU Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, "Brunswick House," Bolivia, following a long illness.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Jan. 18, 1938, he was the son of the late Donald F. Gates and Mary Hughes Gates-Bliss. He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant and was retired from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department. He was also employed with the Ocean Isle Beach Police Department and was a local radio personality with WDZD Radio.
Mr. Don was instrumental in establishing the Brunswick County Community Watch program that is still in effect today. He was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening and just being outdoors, as well as politics.
Mr. Don was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne Margaret Ashley; and a daughter-in-law, Nila M. Canfield Gates.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ivey N. Best Gates; two sons, Stephen D. Gates of Benson and LTC. Donald J. Gates and wife, Jennifer K. Gates, of Smithfield; a daughter, I. Irene Gates Dostal and husband, Sgt. Maj. Patrick Dostal, of Sunset Beach; seven grandchildren, Ashley M. Dostal, Lauren E. Gates, Taylor K. Gates, Mary A. Gates, Justin P. Dostal, Trey Cooke and Alexis Cooke; and a host of special nieces and nephews.
Funeral was 2 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2013, in the chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service with the Rev. Bob Rea officiating. Inurnment will follow in the McKeithan Cemetery, Ash, with military honors.
