Eloise Jones Humphrey, 85, of Southport, died Saturday, March 9, 2013. She was born Aug. 26, 1927, in New Bern, the youngest child of the late Pauline Willis Jones and the late James Luther Jones Sr.
In addition to her parents, Eloise was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Wade Hammons Humphrey; brothers, Harry, James Jr., Paul and Robert. Sisters preceding her in death include Doris Robinson, Margaret Parker Lloyd and Neta Boyd.
She is survived by son Wade Alexander Humphrey of Holden Beach and daughter Susan Johnson of Southport.
She was lovingly known as "Nanny" to granddaughters Susan Michelle Perry of Huntersville and Kimberly Anne Shore of Advance; great-grandchildren include Alexandria and Joseph Perry and Jackson and Tyler Shore.
Eloise grew up in New Bern and graduated from New Bern High School in 1944, where she was a cheerleader and played on the girls' basketball team. It is also there that she first played her beloved game of tennis.
She spent more than 40 years of her married life in Orlando, Fla., where her husband was employed. After her husband's death she moved to Southport, where she resided for 15 years.
Eloise was an active member of Broadway United Methodist Church all her years in Orlando. She was a volunteer at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando and also at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. The major force of her life was her children, grandchildren and later great-grandchildren.
Her passion in life was playing tennis, which she did both in Orlando and Southport until she was forced to give it up for health reasons at the age of 80.
A memorial service will be in the spring at Broadway United Methodist Church in Orlando.
