Joyce Mae Woodson White of Shallotte, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Brunswick Novant Medical Center after a short illness.
Joyce was born May 26, 1929, in Alexander Va., and was raised in Washington, D.C., by her deceased parents, Mitchell Woodson and Elsie Mae Cook Woodson.
She was the sister of the late Howard I. Woodson.
Joyce was married to the late John J. White Sr. for 57 years, who passed in 2006.
She is survived by sons, John J. White Jr., James H. White, and Kenneth M. White; by daughters-in law, Helen L. Davis-White and Sarah J. White; and daughter-in-law once removed, Susan Vail White Klein; sister-in-law Gladys Wiser-Woodson; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four nieces from the Woodson family.
She is also survived by numerous members of her deceased husband's family and all decedents of the William A. and Helen White Family from Washington, D.C.
Joyce was able to skip two grades and graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., in 1945 and began working with The U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In the late 1950s Joyce became director of public relations at Hazelton Lab in Mclean, Va. Later she served as assistant sales manager at Saks Furrier in Washington, D.C.
In the late 1960s Joyce made a career change into the nursing profession where she earned an R.N. certification from the Washington Hospital Center School of Nursing.
After five years in critical care and OR nursing, Joyce entered The George Washington University School of Medicine in the 1970s where she earned her certificate in anesthesiology and remained a practicing CRNA through 2004.
Joyce was active in her community in both Vienna and Shallotte.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Lee Funeral Home, 11840 Hwy 90, Little River, S.C.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Va.
