MaryJane Hack, 67, a Winding River resident for the last 10 years, lost her six-month battle with cancer on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. She died peacefully at Brunswick County Hospice with friends and family at her side.
"Jane" was born on Dec. 17, 1944, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Richard and Mary (Dailey) Fetter.
She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and the Sisters of Charity Hospital School of Radiology. It was while taking an X-ray that she met her husband Robert "Bob" Hack of Kenmore, N.Y. They were married on Feb. 5, 1966, while Bob was on active duty in the Army and began their 46-year journey through life together. They left the Army that same year to provide stability for their family and then proceeded to move 12 times, living in three states before retiring to North Carolina in 2003.
As a stay-at-home mom, Jane used her X-ray license to work part-time to help provide for her family. During this time she had positions as a dental assistant, emergency room technician and medical technician, as well as an orthopedic X-ray technician.
When her two sons left for college, Jane went back to work full time in the area she enjoyed the most, pediatric orthopedics.
Jane was very active in church and charitable activities throughout her life. Her high point as a volunteer was achieved when she organized, trained and ran the timing for the swimming events at the National Special Olympics
at LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
In retirement, Jane served as treasurer of the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol, tutored high school students, served as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound, ushered at church, and worked with Winding River Outreach, Caring Visitors, and the Back Porch Stitchers.
She also stayed busy with the Winding River Players and the Woman's Golf Association, as well as mah-jong and bunco groups. She also assisted her husband at numerous Knights of Columbus charity and service events.
Many will miss her, as she truly made a difference to those programs and the people she touched.
Jane is survived by her husband Bob; their two sons, William and Scott and their wives Pamela and Shannon; and grandsons, Andrew and Ryan, all of whom reside in Texas.
She is also survived by her brothers, Richard and Robert Fetter of Buffalo, N.Y.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at Saint Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church, on U.S. 17 in Shallotte.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jane's name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422. All donations will be applied to the dedication of a Documentation Alcove in Jane's memory.
