William D. Stackhouse went to be with his Lord on the evening of January 19, 2013, at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick County in Bolivia.
He was born in Williamsport, Pa., on June 24, 1923, the son of Melvin Dorsey and Edna Paulhamus Stackhouse.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn; his brother, Harold; and a sister, Betty.
Bill was a member and deacon at Ocean View Baptist Church in Ocean Isle Beach. He proudly served his country overseas during World War II
as a member of Company B, 94th Division.
Bill and Evelyn lived in Pennsylvania and Endicott, N.Y., until retiring in Sunset Beach in 1988.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and wonderful friend.
He loved life and life loved him back. He was always doing something for others such as collecting money through fundraisers to send children to summer camp at Delta Lake Bible Conference Center; buying a school bus at an auction, filling it with clothing and food, and delivering it to the Desi Scott Children's Home in Kentucky; and raising money to buy a specially equipped van for a young girl in his church who had suffered a head injury.
You could always count on him to help whenever someone was in need.
His fun-loving spirit served him to his last days as he brought a smile to his family, friends and to the wonderful nurses and aides who took such great care of him at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick County.
He will be missed, but we have all been blessed to have had him in our lives.
He is survived by three sons, Marvin (Linda) of Ocean Isle Beach, John (Erma) of Myrtle Beach, S.C, and Richard (Jackie) of Orange, Va.; nine grandchildren and spouses; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Rachel Hinson.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ocean View Baptist Church in Ocean Isle Beach, followed by a celebration of his life in the Family Life Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401 or Delta Lake Bible Conference Center, 6420 Pillmore Drive, Rome, NY 13440.
