Annie (Sellers) "Ruth" Bracken, 81, formerly of Virginia Beach, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, in Richmond, Va., with her daughters by her side.
She was born Jan. 18, 1936, in Supply. Ruth's joyous life was characterized by many tireless years of making dresses for school and church choirs, serving as Cub Scout den mother, PTA president, Virginia Social Services volunteer and loving mother. Ruth retired from Norfolk Baptist Association, was a longtime member of Bayside Baptist Church and served as past worthy matron of Bayside Chapter No.181 Order of The Eastern Star. Those who knew her best will remember her for her sense of humor, spirit of generosity and her fierce love of family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Robert Talmadge Bracken; her parents, Odell Yates and Sarah Hewett Sellers; four sisters, Edith Chadwick, Elva Grey Crawford, Betty Ann Sellers and Berta Barnes; and two brothers, Quentin and Stacy Sellers.
She is survived by a son, John Bracken of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Sarah Hutcheson (Troy) of Virginia Beach and Patricia Carter (Coates) of Richmond; a sister, Sue Creech; a brother, Garland Sellers; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia.
At a date to be determined, a memorial service and interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
