Mrs. Ethel Beatrice Varnam Galloway, 98, of the Varnamtown community, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
Mrs. Galloway was born in Brunswick County on Jan. 29, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Wesley and Dora Dixon Varnam and her step-mother, Roxie Varnam.
During her early childhood she and her family spent time on several islands on the eastern coast before settling on Bald Head Island.
Her fondest memories were on Bald Head Island where she loved swimming in the ocean with the dolphins and walking on the beach. This is where she met her beloved husband, Carl Galloway.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and caring person to all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Galloway; siblings, Garland Varnam, Grace Hageman, and Milton Varnam; a grandchild, Troy Galloway; and two great-grandchildren, Shea Britt and Ryan Dilworth.
She is survived by her children, Faye Edens and husband Vic of Wilmington, Gene Galloway and wife Helen, Jimmy Galloway and wife Ruby, Ronnie Galloway and wife Sylvia, Gary Galloway and wife Judy, and Maurice Galloway and wife Linda, all of Supply; two brothers, Durbin Varnam and wife Linda, and Hubert Varnam of Supply; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; and her special caregivers, Tammy Varnam and Tammy Williams.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Negron officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tim Galloway, Tyler Galloway, Terrance Galloway, Gary Ross Galloway, Mark Galloway, Jeffery Galloway, Darron Edens, Frank Dilworth and Hubert Varnam Jr.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church.
