James Craven Hewett, 78, of Supply, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, in the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center.

Born in Brunswick County, June 15, 1935, he was a son of the late Johnnie Edward "Shub" Hewett and Eliza Danford Hewett. Craven was a devoted father and grandfather who loved spending time with his grandsons. He was retired from Cottrell Engineering after having over 40 years of service dredging from Florida to New Jersey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mina Smith.
Survivors include his son, Craven Allen Hewett and wife, Jennifer, of Supply; siblings, Lou Cheers of Shallotte, Boyce Hewett and wife, Florence, of Supply, Nelda Smith and husband, J.B., of Shallotte; grandsons, Craven Addison Hewett, Briley Allen Hewett and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Sharon United Methodist Church on Holden Beach Road in Supply, by the Revs. Eddie Hill and Michael Hewett. Interment followed in the Shell Point Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends prior to the service at Sharon United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers were the Rev. Michael Hewett, Timmy Hewett, Lindberg Smith, Dean Smith, Joey McCall and George Todd. Honorary pallbearers were Johnnie Smith, Gehrig Smith and James Galloway Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shell Point Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3059 Shell Point Road, Shallotte, NC 28470.
