Born Oct. 23, 1938, and raised in Reidsville, James was the son of the late James Fischer Trotter and Martha Neal Trotter. Educated in Reidsville public schools, he graduated from Reidsville High School in 1956 and attended Hargrave Military Academy on a post graduate athletic scholarship in 1957, graduating from there that year. He went on to The Citadel in Charleston S.C., in 1958 and transferred to Guilford College in Greensboro in 1960. In 1961 James married the love of his life, Margaret Scott Rodwell of Warrenton, and started to work for American Tobacco Co. at the Reidsville Branch. In January he was transferred to the Durham branch and was given the opportunity to learn the manufacturing processes from start to finish. James became its branch manager and in 1986 was transferred back to the Reidsville Branch location as its primary manager.
While in Durham, James served on the boards of United Way, the American Red Cross, Saint Mary's Country Day School, and helped the chamber on various projects. He served on the vestry of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Durham, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville and St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church in Shallotte. He served as a senior warden for a total of three years.
An avid golfer, James enjoyed the joys and frustrations of the game, with his buddies, from the beach to the mountains of North Carolina. He was also a lifelong fan of the UNC Tar Heels.
James is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Scott R. Trotter; son, James Fischer Trotter III and his wife, Elaine Blanton Trotter, of Tampa, Fla.; their two sons, James Fischer Trotter lV and Tanner Blanton Trotter and his wife, Stephanie Trotter, and their son, Peter Trotter; his daughter, Martha Trotter Pearson and her husband, Kent Pearson, of Pittsboro and their two boys, Benjamin Pearson and Forest Pearson; a daughter, Scott R.
