John Philip Murphy, 74, a resident of Calabash for 12 years and formerly of Mahopac, N.Y., died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with his family by his side.

Mr. Murphy was born on July 23, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late William and Sarah Shanahan Murphy.
He retired after 37 years of service from Con Edison in 1993 and drove a school bus for Lakeland School District in Shrub Oak, N.Y., for seven years.
Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Violet Murphy; a daughter, Karen Lynch and husband Sean of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; two sons, Kevin Murphy of Palm Coast, Fla., and Brian Murphy and his wife Laura of Pleasantville, N.Y.; a brother, William Murphy of Charlotte; and six grandchildren, Nicole Murphy, Michael Lynch, Megan Murphy, Conor Lynch, Emma Murphy and Jack Murphy.
John was a member of America Legion Nocha White Post 503 in Calabash and enjoyed playing poker with friends on Thursday nights.
The family had a memorial service from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Brunswick Funeral Service in Shallotte.
A Mass of Christian burial was on Saturday, Feb. 9, and his remains were entombed in the columbarium at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte.
