Johnny Richard "John" Benton, 71, of Woodstock, Ga., passed away peacefully
Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, with his family by his side.
Born in Southport, John spent more than 30 years in Cherokee County, Ga. He
proudly served our country in the U.S. Army receiving the Bronze
Star Medal while serving in Vietnam.
John retired as an information systems consultant with Hewlett-Packard. In
his private life, he was an avid gardener who was dedicated to his family,
his garden and his faith. He was a member of Mount Gilead United Methodist
Church, and until his health declined, he spent his Sunday mornings singing
in the choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie James and Ida Lee Coleman
Benton; and two brothers, Charlie James Benton Jr. and Donald Ray Benton.
Survivors include his wife, Carol E. H. Benton; daughter, Aimee C. Benton;
grandson, Landon; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and David Holden; and
sisters-in-law, Martha Ward Benton and Sara Benton Richardson.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Lakeside Funeral
Home Chapel in Woodstock, Ga. Military graveside rites were conducted at 2
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road in Mint
Hill. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Gilead United
Methodist Church, 889 Arnold Mill Road, Woodstock, GA 30188 or Mountain
View United Methodist Preschool, 2300 Jamerson Road, Marietta, GA 30066.
