Joyce Gasque Carmichael Little died peacefully Wednesday, July 30, 2014, in her home at Aldersgate CCRC in Charlotte. She was 87 years old. She was beloved by everyone who knew her and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She was born in Mullins, S.C., to Ella and Boyd Gasque on Jan. 31, 1927. She graduated from Winthrop University with a degree in music. She taught public school music, seventh grade and reading in Brunswick County Schools in Shallotte for 30 years. An active and faithful member of Camp United Methodist Church, she was the choir director and musician for decades until moving to Charlotte in 1996. She continued to share her musical talent as a pianist at Aldersgate and Asbury Care Center and served there in many other ways.
She and David B. Carmichael Sr. shared over 50 years in a loving marriage that include traveling throughout the United States and Canada, camping in their motor home. She married Joseph P. Little in 2003 and was happily married for nine years, until his death in 2012. She was known for her joyful spirit, her ever-present optimism and her expression of love for God through service to others.
In addition to her husbands, she is preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
She is survived by two sisters, Dot Maughan and husband, George and Thelma Lewis; a son, David B. Carmichael Jr. and wife, JoAnn; a daughter, Joyce C. Brooks and husband, Linwood; special granddaughter, Yarrow Rice; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation and interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Brunswick Funeral Services in Shallotte. A celebration of her life will be held at Aldersgate at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 24, with a reception following.
