Margaret K. Hughes, affectionately known as "Peggy," passed away in the beautiful tranquility of the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia, Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Peggy was born in Orange, N.J., in August 1925, the eldest child of Nora and William Kingston. She was followed by four siblings; William, Eleanor Ann, Bernadette and John, with whom she shared a lifetime of good times and memories.
Margaret graduated from New Jersey State Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education. Soon after, she met and married Richard Hughes and moved to Charlotte. Margaret always considered North Carolina her home and spent many years as a teacher for the Diocese of Charlotte, teaching at St. Anne's and St. Gabrielle's Schools. After retiring from teaching, Peggy and "Dick" moved to Wilmington, and then to Ocean Isle Beach for their retirement years. They were fortunate to enjoy many years of travel before her husband's passing Dec. 6, 2005, exactly eight years ago.
Margaret is survived by her children, Gayle Hughes of Ocean Isle Beach, Trish Collins (Steve), of Raleigh, formerly of Ocean Isle Beach, Richie Hughes (Debbie), of Galax, Va. and Carol Hughes of Ft. Pierce, Fla. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Lindsay Shaw (Matt), of Raleigh and Laura Inman (Justin), of Ash; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan and McKenna Inman, and Sam and Sylvie Shaw.
The family would like to extend special thanks to her phenomenal nurses and caregivers over the past many years, especially Rebecca, Fayleene, Mel and Lulu, and the staff at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.
The family received friends at Brunswick Funeral Service Tuesday evening, Dec. 10.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday morning, Dec. 11, at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church with burial in Brunswick Memorial Gardens.
