Mary Alice Cleveland, 78, of Little River, S.C., and formerly of Calabash, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, in the Summit Place Nursing Center, Little River, S.C.

Mrs. Cleveland was born April 2, 1934, in St. Lambert, Quebec, to the late Avard and Evelyn Wilkins Sim.
She worked as a teacher for the Missouri and Pennsylvania Public School System. Mrs. Cleveland was a member and past president of the Waterway Arts Association. She was a Master Gardener and watercolorist.
Mrs. Cleveland was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Makely; a grandson, Bryan Backus in Afghanistan; one sister; and three brothers.
Surviving is her husband, Stuart Cleveland Sr.; two sons, Stuart Cleveland Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Timothy Cleveland of Fairfax, Va.; a daughter, Anne Backus of Harbor Beach, Mich.; four granddaughters; and three grandsons.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
