Monfred "Monty" Kaehler died Tuesday, June 5, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of the late Marion Louder Kaehler and Richard C. Kaehler. His stepmother, Joan Allen Kaehler; daughter, Kathy Kaehler Dunn; and son, Richard Kaehler preceded him in death.
Monty graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School, Hyde Park, N.Y., and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In 1953, he married the former Helen Filler at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel. Upon his naval discharge, he became employed by NY Telephone Co. and retired from AT&T as a national account manager. He loved sailing and golfing and was formerly a member of Chelsea Yacht Club and Dutchess Golf and Country Club. He was a life member of Pirate Canoe Club. Monty was a football and basketball official and served as a past president of the Central Hudson Valley Football Officials Inc. organization.
Monty and Helen moved to Calabash in 1997 to Brunswick Plantation where he was the first chairman of the Brunswick Plantation Men's Golf League. In 2015, they moved to Brightwater Senior Living in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In May 2016, Monty joined other area veterans on the South Carolina Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Helen Filler Kaehler; daughter, Kim Kaehler Chamberlain, Greenville, S.C., and her husband, Dwight Chamberlain; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Kaehler; son-in-law, John Dunn; and grandchildren, Devon, Luke and Victoria Chamberlain and Kelsey and John J. Dunn.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
