Mr. Morrison B. Watkins Sr., 88, of Town Creek Road, Leland, died Friday, March 15, 2013.
Mr. Watkins was born in Brunswick County on Jan. 6, 1925, and was the son of the late Marvin B. and Mattie Thompson Watkins. He was husband of the late Lillian Rabon Watkins and was also preceded in death by son, William Roger Watkins; granddaughter, Molly Cora Carney; and siblings, Curtis Watkins, Alvin Watkins, Marvin Watkins, Harold Watkins, Avis Braddock and Lois Smith.
Mr. Watkins was a U.S. Army veteran and proudly served his country during World War II. He fought for his country during the Battle of the Bulge, serving under Gen. Patton and in other campaigns. He was a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart and earned three Bronze Stars. He was a long-time Little League baseball coach and helped establish American Legion Baseball in Brunswick County. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.
He is survived by four sons, Morry Watkins and wife, Linda, of Leland; Don Watkins and wife, Barbara, of Leland; David Watkins and wife, Amy, of Lawsonville; and John Watkins and wife, Cathy, of Leland; a sister, Wilma Rochelle and husband, Gene, of Toano, Va.; grandchildren, Amber Morgan, Michael Watkins, Christopher Watkins, Heath Watkins, Jeremy Watkins, Freddie Watkins, Laura Nussman, Nancy Whitzel; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Watkins, Cameron Watkins, Paige Watkins, Hayden Watkins, William Roger Carney, Frederick Whitzel, Molly Michelle Whitzel, Hunter Whitzel, Brayden Watkins, Kennedy Clare Watkins, Caleb Nussman and Jayden Stalling.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers were Freddie Watkins, Michael Watkins, Heath Watkins, Jeremy Watkins, Marvin "Sonny" Watkins and Baxter Watkins.
Honorary pallbearers were Floyd Henry Jr., Spencer Lanier, Bill Bullard, Tom Maultsby, Joe Best, Nelson Best, Patrick Nussman, Ralph Frazier, Jeff Levasseur, John Pucci, James Davis, Freddie Barnhill and Carter Rabon.
The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service and other times from the home of Don Watkins, 419 Town Creek Road, Leland.
The family would like to thank Dr. Neil Musselwhite and Dr. Ellis Tinsley Jr. and their staff for their excellent care given to Mr. Morrison for many years.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, any other veteran's organization or a charity of one's choice.
