Mrs. Myrtle Virginia Brewer Smith, of Holden Beach, died July 24, 2013, at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.

Born in Anson County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Martha Ellen Gibson Brewer and Archie David Brewer. She was the wife of the late Rev. Joe Carlton Smith of Stanly County. She attended schools in Norwood and Ansonville, graduating as valedictorian from Ansonville High School. She was a graduate of Brevard College and Greensboro College.
She first worked as a high school Bible teacher in Kannapolis and then as Director of Christian Education at First United Methodist Church in Hickory before joining her husband in his ministry. Mrs. Smith was employed as a public school teacher for 30 years in Stokes, Forsyth and Brunswick Counties as she followed her husband throughout 43 years as members of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Smith was a gifted Bible teacher and often taught study programs for the United Methodist Women in their churches. After her retirement, she was a literacy tutor in Brunswick County and a volunteer chaplain at the Brunswick County Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn B. Wise, and three brothers, Roy C. Brewer, Vernon A. Brewer, Sr., and Lloyd A. Brewer.
She is survived by three daughters, Deborah S. Newman of Holden Beach, Judy L. Smith of Cary, and Martha S. Brooks of Morehead City; a granddaughter, Megan Newman of Holden Beach; a grandson, Robert Brooks of Atlanta; a sister, Jean B. Nash of Albemarle; and two brothers, Jim R. Brewer and Donald F. Brewer, both of Albemarle.

Services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday July 30, at Stony Hill United Methodist Church, her husband's home congregation, 38401 Valley Drive, east of Albemarle, N.C. The family will be available for visitation one hour prior to the service in the Stony Hill Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
