Olenda Robinson Thompkins departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at the age of 90, with family by her side.
She was born in Brunswick County on March 6, 1924, delivered by Dr. William Goley at the family home in Boone's Neck. She was the youngest of the 11 children of Jesse Drew Robinson and Martha Elizabeth Arnold Robinson.
Mrs. Thompkins graduated from Shallotte High School in 1942 and married her childhood sweetheart, George Vinible Thompkins, that same year. They were married just a few months shy of 50 years when he passed away in 1992.
Mrs. Thompkins was a gifted gardener and a talented seamstress. She also enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit Iran, Australia, parts of Europe, and all of North America. She taught kindergarten for more than 15 years at Village Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville and was a hospital volunteer for many years in Albemarle. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Thompkins was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as her three bothers, Jesse Cromwell Robinson, Stetson Herbert Robinson and Willie Boyd Robinson; and her seven sisters Mary Elizabeth Greenley, Bessie Lee Caison, Delma Varnam, Ona Shytle, Beatrice Chadwick, Vara Sermons and Irene Milligan.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Clouse of the home and Barbara Gruene of Kingman, Ariz.; grandchildren, Andrea Lomascola of Fresno, Calif., Suzy Velasco and her husband, John, of Southport and David Faller and his wife, Renée, of Yucca Valley, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Cherie Cosentino, Jennifer Lomascola, Jacob Powell, Stuart Velasco, Sarah Velasco, Carson Faller and Selah Faller; two brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law; as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter for the support and care they provided.
A celebration of Mrs. Thompkins' life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Sharon United Methodist Church. Family time will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Eddie Hill will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sharon United Methodist Church.
