Patricia May "Ma Pat" Griffin Sandifer, 77, of Holden Beach passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at her residence.
"Ma Pat," as she was affectionately known, was born in Charleston, S.C., on July 19, 1940, to the late James Drufus Griffin Sr. and May Lois Daughtery Griffin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Donald Carlston McKeithan Sr., and her husband, David Sandifer.
She, along with her parents and brother Jim started the Holden Beach Realty Corp. in 1961. Pat and brother Jim were a part of The Brunswick Beacon staff in the 1960s. She currently was owner and broker of Holden Beach Properties and Rental Services of which she gave 110 percent of herself to its clients. Holden Beach was special to Pat and she wanted it to remain a family-oriented home for her family and the members of the community. She was involved in the politics of the island and served as commissioner from 1999-2001 and 2005-2007. A Republican at heart, she would encourage everyone to participate in the democratic process by voting, and believed in voting for the right person over party. She loved animals, especially cats, and could be found taking care of many strays at any given time as well as gardening in her yard.
Pat was a genuine and caring lady who was someone who built and maintained countless relationships over many years while making it seem effortless.
Pat was survived by her adoring children, Victoria Brown (Scott) of Supply, Michael McKeithan (DeeAnn) of Rapid City, S.D., Katherine McKeithan of Ash and Gordon Nash (Jennifer) of Sunset Beach; brother, Jim Griffin of Boone; grandchildren, Ryan McKeithan, Donald McKeithan Jr., Mackenzie Jensen, Meghan McKeithan, Mitchell McKeithan and Cierra McKeithan; and great-grandchildren, Gavyn and Harper McKeithan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, in the chapel of White Funeral Service, Supply. Entombment will follow in Brunswick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mike Nelson, Richard Crabtree, Gary Staley, Adam Milligan, Michael Hamilton and Shawn Smith.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at White Funeral and Cremation Service, Supply chapel.
The family requests with gratitude that donations be made in her name to Rescue Animals Community Effort (R.A.C.E.), at P.O. Box 3370, Shallotte, NC 28469; Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR), at 3376 St. Charles Place, Southport, NC 28461 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
