Richard Clinton Lavin, born in Framingham, Mass., Nov. 6, 1940, passed away unexpectedly at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Dick attended Framingham High School where he was very involved in varsity sports and student government. He attended Boston College on a football scholarship and graduated in 1963. A week later he married his high school sweetheart, Marsha Webb of Natick, Mass. He took over as manager of The Sudbury Inn in Sudbury and developed The Banjo Room into a successful enterprise. He began in sales and was involved in starting TIE Communications, then his own company, Northeast Telephone, in 1988.
Dick was very involved with his family of nine children, Tony Lavin of Stow, Mass., Joline Fish of Ash, Jim Lavin of Oxford, Mass., Shari Lavin of Boston, Patricia Lavin of Boston, Craig Lavin of West Jordan, Utah, Tyronne Lavin of Sandy, Utah, Claudy Lavin of Orem, Utah, and Travis Lavin of Boston; and 22 grandchildren.
The Lavins retired to Shallotte in 2007. Dick has been very involved in his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was a bishop of the Boston Ward under the leadership of Mitt Romney, who was stake president in Boston at the time. He loved his family and his work in the church. He was loved by his family and friends, with his outgoing personality and strong work ethic. He was a natural master of ceremonies and enjoyed participating in Brunswick Little Theatre. He was loved by so many friends, and will be missed by all who knew him.
A luncheon will be at noon Sunday, March 2, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Copas Road in Shallotte, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m.
