Richard Eugene "Gene" Bailey of Holden Beach, formerly of Pageton, W.Va., died peacefully Wednesday, July 26, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Affectionately known as Beetle he was born Feb. 26, 1929, in Goodwill, W. Va., in Mercer County the son of the late Mary Bane Arrington Bailey and Hector Bryan Bailey. He worked in the coal mining industry and was a proud member of the UMWA. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Leonard "Wink" Bailey and his sister Betty Pompie.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Sue Wilson Bailey; and his four children, Glenna Bailey and Ann Marie Bailey of Huntington, W.Va., Lynne Bailey and husband, Rick Small, of Greensboro and John "Skip" Bailey and wife, Marsha, of Maynardville, Tenn.; grandson, Brian Bailey and wife, Amanda; and great-grandson Chase Bailey, of Indianapolis; sister, Virginia "Gert" Bailey Yost of Dundalk, Md.; brother Earl Bailey Sr. of Lawton, Okla.; as well as a large extended family.
The Bailey family received friends and relatives Saturday, July 29, at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W. Va. Graveside services followed at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. The Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard conducted military graveside rites.
