Bob Thomas of Winding River Plantation passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, Bolivia.
He was born in Bloomsburg, Pa., on May 11, 1936, the son of Robert and Mary Shutt Thomas.
Bob is survived by his wife, Lynda. He was preceded in death by their daughter, Karen and his parents. He is also survived by daughter, Deborah, and son, Blair; seven grandchildren; and brother, Richard.
He graduated from William and Mary College in Wiliamsburg, Va., where he played varsity football on scholarship and was a member of Theta Delta fraternity. He joined the U.S. Army ROTC in college serving seven years in the Army reserves. His business career was in the commercial printing industry. After 20 years working with major print corporations, he started his own print sales company.

While living in Oakland, N.J., he was elected to the town council for two terms serving as police commissioner. He coached youth football for the Oakland Recreation Association teams. Bob had many interests including skydiving, becoming a jump master with 149 jumps. He earned his private pilot's license and became an instrument rated pilot, flying his Cessna 210 until his retirement to North Carolina.
When he moved to Winding River Plantation, his love of golf led him to serve on the founding board of the Winding River Golf Association. He also served as the first chairman of the Advisory Board of Governors.
Bob was recognized as a 50-year Masonic service member by his home lodge, Charity Lodge 0144 F. & A.M. of Lewisburg, Pa. He was also a member of Salaam Shriners, Livingston, N.J.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Winding River Plantation and his inurnment of ashes will be at Christ Church Episcopal Memorial Garden, Richmond, Va.
