Sandra Sabino Chinn, 70, of Ocean Isle Beach, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at home.
Mrs. Chinn was born on Nov. 3, 1942, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Alfredo and Rose Kershner Sabino.
A 1960 graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy, Mrs. Chinn obtained a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1965 from Villa Maria College, Erie, Pa. She earned a master's degree in education and human development from George Washington University in 1980.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Chinn was a special education teacher in Prince George's County Public Schools, Md. In 1992, she became the director of human relations and the Title IX coordinator for that school system.
She retired in 1996, and moved to Ocean Isle Beach with her husband, Hugh, a retired law enforcement officer.
Never one to stay retired, Mrs. Chinn began a second career here in North Carolina, as an adjunct professor of education at Brunswick Community College and Horry Georgetown Technical College.
During her years here she also volunteered at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, the Ocean Isle Sea Turtle Patrol, the AVID program at West Brunswick High School, and served as a board member of the Friends of the Rourk Library, and was a member of the Bent Tree Ladies Club.
She was a parishioner at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church for 16 years, where she served on the bereavement committee, volunteered with Loaves & Fishes and headed an Emmaus prayer group.
Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Hugh Chinn; daughter, Lisa Chinn of Ocean Isle Beach; two brothers, Donald Sabino and wife Ellen of Brandywine, Md., and Michael Sabino of Indian Head, Md.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in St. Brendan Catholic Church.
