Sarah Benita Carr, 78, of Holden Beach, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, in Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Bolivia.

Born in Duplin County, on Dec. 28, 1933, she was one of 14 children of Otis D. and Sally Spell Brown.
After high school she went to James Walker Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her nursing degree. She worked for Duplin General Hospital, Kenansville; Dr. Corbit Quinn, Magnolia; and Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
She was active in the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church, Rose Hill, where she was a Sunday school teacher and also volunteered in the nursery. "Mrs. Sarah" as she was fondly known, was most recently a member of Camp United Methodist Church, Shallotte.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son, Anthony S. Carr of Holden Beach; a daughter, Jacqueline L. Diercks and husband Steve of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Bobby Brown of Rose Hill, and Willis Brown of Wilmington; two sisters, Doris Chestnutt of Warsaw, and Ruth Lanier of Magnolia; and four grandchildren, Ethan S. Carr, Chandler Diercks, Nicole Diercks and Matthew Diercks.
Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte by the Rev. Dr. Richard Vaughan.
Interment will be at a later date to be announced.
In her giving nature, she insisted her remains be donated to science for the advancement of the medical field, to which she devoted so much of her life.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte.
