Shirley Mae Syroka, 78, of Shallotte, fell asleep in death Monday, Jan. 6, 2014. She was born Shirley Mae Johnson to George and Doris Johnson of Erie, Pa., Feb. 12, 1935. After raising a family in the cold of Erie, she settled in sunny North Carolina to be with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was active and faithful as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She enjoyed helping the less fortunate, especially those with four paws and a tail. Children, thrift store hunting, good eats and caring for animals in need, were among her greatest joys.
She was preceded in death by a husband, Richard Syroka; an infant daughter, Sheila Syroka; and sister, Marion Culbertson. She leaves behind a sister, Doris Jean Lamp of Erie, Pa.; a son, Richard Syroka and his wife, Becky, of Cambridge Springs, Pa.; a daughter, Cindee Syroka of Denver, Colo.; and a daughter, Sandy Perisich and husband, Luke, of Shallotte. In addition, she will be missed by her granddaughters, Becky Laura Johnson and husband, Mike, of Arvada, Colo., Shelly Dombrowski and husband, Greg, of Wattsburg, Pa., and Sheila Brown and husband, Ben, of Pittsburgh. She adored her great-granddaughter, Haylie Johnson and great-grandson Brendan Johnson. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 5909 Ocean Highway West in Ocean Isle Beach. There are no arrangements for viewing.
