Beatrice Elizabeth Christian, 93, of Boiling Spring Lakes, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with her family at her side.
The Guest Book is expired.
Bea was born in Providence, R.I., May 27, 1920. She was the only child of William R. Dunphy and Beatrice Elizabeth Felton. After graduating from high school in 1939, The Providence Journal awarded her a full scholarship to The Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, which she attended for two and one-half years. She married Joe Christian of Monroe City, Mo., in Providence in 1947.
After Joe's retirement from the U.S. Navy, the family moved to Houston, where Joe accepted a job in the lumber industry. They eventually relocated to Eugene, Ore., and eventually to North Carolina, where they settled after Joe's retirement from The Georgia Pacific Corporation. During their time in Texas, Bea worked for various companies as a bookkeeper.
Wherever she lived, Bea was an active quilter and seamstress. She hand made most of her daughters' clothing and made countless items, both practical and artistic, which she gave to family and friends. Her generosity extended to giving over a hundred handmade quilts to The Ronald McDonald House and pillowcases for a local Women's Shelter. She was also proud to be an honorary member of The Beach Quilter's Club of Long Beach.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; daughters, Jo-Ann Leaf and her partner, Daniel Gould, of Falmouth, Mass., and Suzann and Robbie Jones of Southport; grandchildren, Jason Leaf of Palm Springs, Calif., Michell Hartung of Uncasville, Conn., Chrystal Causey of Long Beach and Mackenzie Jones of Southport. Surviving great-grandchildren are Ashleigh, Alyson and Abigail Hartung and Trevor Causey.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel in Southport.
The family received friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
