Mr. Robert Theodore Horne, 72, of Ocean Isle Beach, formerly of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 after a long and courageous fight with cancer. A service to celebrate Robert's life was at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212 with the Rev. Steve Bass of Charlotte officiating, followed by burial with his parents at Sharon Memorial Park. The family received friends and guests for one hour prior to the service.
Robert was born Oct. 5, 1941, in Charlotte to the late Jessie Franklin Horne and Lola Wooten Horne. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Stikeleather Horne; two daughters, Lundee Nance and husband, Doug, of Southport and DeLaine Hargett and husband, Steve, of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Nichole Hargett of Wichita, Kan., and Spc. Kurtis Hargett, U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas; two sisters, Irene Thompson and husband, Walter, of Charlotte and Inez Wolfe and husband, Earl, of Hendersonville; a brother, Reidie Burke of Charlotte; along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and a special pet and companion, Maggie.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his bother, Gene Franklin Horne.
Robert was retired from the city of Charlotte Street Department. He and Judy moved to their second home at Ocean Isle Beach in 1993, where he enjoyed golf, fishing, saving sea turtles and gathering with friends at Hardee's each morning. He was an active member of Ocean View Baptist Church and loved by everyone. They have an extended family of friends at Salt Springs, Fla., where they wintered for three months each year and he learned the art of making ink pens from wood and quilting. Robert was a hard worker and devoted to his family. He was a great inspiration to many during his fight with cancer.
We would like to thank everyone for all the prayers. He will be greatly missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ocean View Baptist Building Fund, 7025 Beach Drive, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469.
