Dicky Powell, 77, of Shallotte, died Saturday, June 7, 2014. He was born in Columbus County, Aug. 2, 1936, a son of the late James and Vivian Hooks Powell. He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy and retired from the North Carolina National Guard. After the death of his father in 1962, he moved his family to Shallotte to manage the family business, Powell Funeral Home. He was the owner of Brunswick Memorial Gardens and he established Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, in 1983 and Brunswick Funeral Service, Southport/Oak Island, in 2013.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Judah Powell.
He was a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church where he had a special love for his church family. He especially enjoyed assisting with vacation Bible school. He never met a stranger.
Dicky was a hunting enthusiast, bagging the Big Five during his many hunts in Africa. He enjoyed hunting doves in Uruguay and Argentina as well as Kodiak brown bear in Alaska and elk in Montana. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his grandsons, Michael, Bryan, Ben, Easton, Brenden, Braxton and Max Powell, and his only granddaughter, Abigail Powell. He was a charter member of South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club and founding member of Shallotte Volunteer Rescue Squad. He has served on the North Carolina Cemetery Board for 14 years.
Surviving, in addition to his grandchildren, are his wife, Connie White Powell; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Powell and his wife, Elisabeth, Tim Powell and his wife, Megan, and Jimmy Powell and his wife, Rebecca; brother, Jerry Powell; sister, Jean Herring; brother-in-law, Jackie White; his dedicated employees and extended family, Larry R. Andrews, Jason Benton, Michael Fulwood, Dave Andrews, Scott Babson, Susie Babson and Joey Benton; and a special friend, Bill Rabon.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, at the family mausoleum in Brunswick Memorial Gardens.
