Graveside memorial service for Gladys L. Richard will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 10:20 a.m. at the Brush Memorial Cemetery Interment Chapel, officiated by Pastor Phil Vogels.
A reception will be held at the Brush United Methodist Church following the graveside service.
Gladys L. Richard, 104, former Brush resident, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2013 at the Sunset Adult Family Home in Bellevue, WA.
She was born March 19, 1909, in Brush to Albert and Margaret McNamee Eikenbary.
Gladys graduated from Brush Union High School in 1928. She started college at Greeley, Colorado, for a short time and then married Donald L. Richard of Brush, where the raised their three sons and farmed and raised sheep. Don died suddenly in 1953.
Gladys worked as secretary to the Morgan County Superintendent of Schools for a short time and then continued her education at the University of Northern Colorado (then known as Colorado State College of Education). She worked as a sorority housemother while attending college and graduated in 1957 with a major in Elementary Education.
Gladys taught the fourth grade at Thomson Elementary School in Brush for 17 years. She retired in 1975, continued to be active in Brush, enjoying face paced four mile walks with her friends.
She also enjoyed traveling, with many trips to her three sons and their families, but also with close friends and her sister Wilma Kastler, in and around the Colorado Rockies and western states. Her longest journey was a trip to Russia.
Gladys was active in the Brush community, volunteering as a 'Gray Lady' of the American Red Cross at Eben Ezer as well as a long-time loyal member of the Brush United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter T, and the Hi Ho Bridge Club.
Gladys moved to the Garden Club Retirement Facility in Bellevue, WA in 1998 to be closer to her youngest son, Allen and his family. In 2009, she moved to the Sunset Adult Family Home.
Gladys was passionate about education and teaching, enjoyed politics, served on election committees, like people, loved her church, was a great bridge player, loved reading, growing flowers and was always very close to her husband and family.
Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Gene and Barbara Richard of San Mateo, CA; Jerry and Phyllis Richard of Spokane, WA; and Allen and Judy Richard of Bellevue, WA; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; sister Wilma Kastler; brother Albert Eikenbary and her parents, Albert and Margaret Eikenbary.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be given in Gladys Richard's name to the Brush United Methodist Church, Brush Museum & Cultural Center or Brush P.E.O. Chapter T.
