Dr. June Oliver Baylor, 83, of Vidalia, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at her home after an extended illness.
She was the oldest daughter of Julian L. Oliver and Annie Garrow Oliver. She was born in Salisbury, Md., and attended public schools in her hometown of Hagerstown, Md. She began her career as a classroom teacher in 1951 at South Potomac at the junior high school in Hagerstown. In 1952, she married her husband and his work necessitated a move to Georgia in 1954. They moved to Richmond Hill and again she taught in the classroom until 1972. Later, she earned her PhD. from the University of Georgia and became the Bryan County Schools superintendent, serving faithfully until 1984. Her intensity, honesty and devotion to her profession soon advanced the Bryan County Schools system to a higher level. She was a regional director for the Georgia Department of Education and retired several years later. Dr. Baylor made Vidalia her home in 1999. She was a member of Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Vidalia.
Dr. Baylor is survived by her husband of 59years, Neill Baylor of Vidalia; two daughters, Anne Baylor Sweat and husband Lawrence of Vidalia and Carol Oliver Baylor of Atlanta; two grandsons, Andrew Baylor Sweat and Stephen Baldwin Sweat, both of Vidalia; three brothers, Julian L. Oliver Jr. and wife Edna-Mae of Williamsport, Md., James G. Oliver and wife Annette of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Kent Oliver and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Vidalia with Father Jim Clendinen officiating. Burial will follow later in Zion Episcopal Church Cemetery in Charles Town, W.Va.
