Monique Marie Therese DeKnop-DeBry, 80, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Hospice House of Savannah after a short illness.
Mrs. DeBry was born in Dilbeek, Belgium. She was an elementary school teacher in Belgium before marrying Jean DeBry and relocating to Kigali, Rwanda, in Africa in 1967 where she assisted with the family aviation business. In 1980, she immigrated to the U.S. to Punta Gorda, Fla., with her family. She was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2010. In January 2012, she moved to Richmond Hill to be close to her son and his family. She was active in several tennis leagues and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, as well as St. Anne's Catholic Church in Richmond Hill. She was an extensive world traveler, avid antiques collector, excellent seamstress and a gardener. A loving mother and grandmother, she dedicated many hours of love and time to her grandchildren.
Mrs. DeBry was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Jean Marie DeBry; her parents, Eugene DeKnop and Juliette Cortvrindt; and two brothers, Andre DeKnop and Georges DeKnop.
She is survived by her son, Benoit Andre DeBry; daughter-in-law, Beth Ann (Betsy) DeBry; granddaughters, Danielle DeBry, Michelle DeBry and Isabelle DeBry; grandsons, Marcus DeBry and Lucas DeBry; two stepchildren in Belgium, Luc DeBry and Christine DeBry; five step-grandchildren also in Belgium; and many nieces and nephews and their children in Europe.
The family thanks the staff of Magnolia Manor in Richmond Hill and Hospice House of Savannah for their loving care of Mrs. DeBry during her time in Georgia.
A funeral mass is at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Richmond Hill with the Rev. Joseph Smith presiding. A light reception will immediately follow in Holy Family Hall. Committal is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Catholic Cemetery, 1720 Wheaton St., Savannah, at Gartland Section E.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday followed by the Rosary at 7 p.m. at Richmond Hill Funeral Home Cox Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to the Carmelite Mission, Our Lady of Confidence Monastery, 11 West Back St., Savannah, Ga. 31406 or the Pregnancy Care Center of Richmond Hill, P.O. Box 1984, Richmond Hill, Ga., 31324.
