Maxie Spence Carpenter, age 101, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Savannah Specialty Care Center. She was the widow of Gordon Carpenter of Richmond Hill.
She was born in Bulloch County, lived in Richmond Hill for many years and later resided at Stillwell Towers of Savannah for 30 years. She was the oldest member of Corinth Baptist Church, Richmond Hill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, I. V. Spence and step-mother, Ellie Spence; one sister, Ruby Wise; five brothers, Hubert, Troy, G.B., Sam and Jimmy Spence.
She is survived by one son, Jack Spence (June) of Richmond Hill; one sister, Patricia Watson (Penny) of South Hill, Va.; three brothers, J. I. Spence (June), Ivey L. Spence (Anna) of Richmond Hill and John T. Spence (Elizabeth) of Pensacola, Fla.; one granddaughter, Jackie Spence of Richmond Hill and one great-grandson, Little Billy Meadows of Richmond Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was 6-8 p.m., Thursday, September 24, in the Richmond Hill Funeral Home, Richmond Hill.
Funeral Services were held 11 a.m., Friday, September 25, in the Richmond Hill Funeral Home, Cox Chapel, Richmond Hill, with Rev. Gary Quinney and Rev. Vincent Ruffom officiating.
Burial was in Bryan Neck Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Richmond Hill.
Pallbearers were Ben Spence, Ivey Spence, III, Barry Spence, Kenny Jones, Penny Watson and Richard Thompson.
Richmond Hill Funeral Home, Cox Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.
