Shirley Sue Bates, 78, of Summerville, S.C., passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, surrounded by her family.
She was born in North Charleston, S.C., and spent most of her working career as a civilian bursar for the Naval Shipyard. She was very active in the Methodist church. She traveled with Lisa to Washington, D.C., New England and Disney World. At age 61, she traveled west of Atlanta for the first time in her life with Lisa and her family to Alaska. There she boarded the Alaska railroad to travel to Northern Alaska to view the aurora borealis.
She was predeceased by her parents, Grace Varner Bates and Thomas S. Bates; and two brothers, Samuel W. Bates and T.Q Bates.
