Mr. William Oscar Newman, age 95, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Hospice Savannah after a long illness.
Mr. Newman was born Sept. 1, 1918, in Bryan County to the late William Raleigh and Tera Burnsed Newman and lived in Bryan County for his entire life. He served his country proudly in World War II as a flight engineer on the B-26 bomber in the U.S. Air Force. He was co-owner of the family sawmill business, Newman Lumber Company, for a time and retired from civil service with the federal government. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed traveling and woodworking and was a skilled technician with anything mechanical.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Jessie C. Newman and Foy G. Newman.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Blondean Smith Newman of Black Creek; two sons, William Dwight Newman and Craig Oscar Newman, both of Black Creek; one daughter, Angela Newman Eason of Savannah; one sister, Mary Newman Hodges of Black Creek; one brother-in-law, Jerome Davis of Black Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral is at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke. Burial with military honors will follow in Lower Black Creek Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
