Wilbur Klopfenstein(1923 - 2013)

Wilbur H. Klopfenstein

SHELBY: Wilbur H. Klopfenstein, age 89, former resident of rural Shelby, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at his home in Magnolia Terrace, Galion.

Born December 1, 1923 in Willard to Ervin J. and Jessie R. (Pollinger) Klopfenstein, he moved to New Washington in 1954 and, in 1978, moved to rural Shelby. He was a 1941 graduate of Willard High School and a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science where he was member of the Pi Sigma Eta fraternity. He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and was employed as the manager with Secor Funeral Home in New Washington until the early 60's. He later was employed as the manager of Ulmer Hardware Store in New Washington. Wilbur retired from PPG in Crestline where he was employed for twenty years with the maintenance department .

A veteran of the U.S. Airforce, he flew 50 missions over Europe during WWII as the ball turret gunner in a B-17. He is survived by two of his original crew members. While on leave from the service, Wilbur married his high school sweetheart, Mildred "Millie" Curns on September 10, 1944.

Wilbur was a member of the New Washington United Methodist Church were he served on various committees, was a member of the New Washington American Legion and the Lions Club. An avid woodworker and gardener, he enjoyed working jigsaw and word jumble puzzles. Wilbur loved shooting trap but loved shooting groundhogs even more. Along with his wife Millie they retired from the New Washington United Methodist Church dartball team when they turned 80. Most recently Wilbur was the drummer for the Magnolia Terrace Band in Galion.

Survivors include his children, Mary Lou (Duane) Dick of Shelby, Nancy (Don Barrett) Reed of Port Clinton, Don (Jeri) Klopfenstein of Hilliard and Paul (Becky) Klopfenstein of Plymouth; five grandchildren, John (Lori) Dick, Alan (Darlene) Dick, Paul (Tammi) Reed, Jennifer (Zach) Bell, Nathan Klopfenstein; six step grandchildren, Brian Smith,Lisa (Cass) Gwirtz,, Matt Bradford, Cory (Carrie) Barrett, Jamie Barrett and Eric (Lydia) Barrett; 12 great grandchildren, Jason, Kevin, Ryan, Laura, Katie, Alex, Trevor, Derek, Parker, Seth, Brianna and Ava Barrett who was born Dec. 2, 2012; two sisters Lola (Klopfenstein) Miles of Kensington, MD and Anne (Klopfenstein) Kuhn of Willard; one sister-in-law Agnes Klopfenstein of Falls Church, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Mildred "Millie" (Curns) Klopfenstein who died October 31, 2012; two brothers Ervin J. and Charles Klopfenstein and five sisters Alberta Thrush, Jessie Coder, Elizabeth "Betty" Payne, Katherine Stiers and Louella Reed.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the New Washington United Methodist Church. Rev. Scott Blevins will officiate with military services provided by the New Washington American Legion. Friends may call at the church from 11:00- 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial expressions may be made to the New Washington United Methodist Church, 402 S. Center Street, New Washington, OH 44854, Hazel Grove Ladies Aid, payable to Pat Baird, treasurer, 5689 State Route 39 NW, Shelby, OH 44875 or donors choice.
