CRESTLINE: Dorothy L. Smith, 90, of the Carlisle House, Bucyrus, and formerly of Crestline, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Carlisle House, Bucyrus.
Dorothy was born in Chatfield Township, on December 26, 1921 to the late Charles and Emma (Green) Riedel. She married Frederick W. Smith on June 24, 1951 and he preceded her in death on February 5, 1987. Dorothy was a 1939 graduate of Chatfield High School and continued her education at Tiffin University. She was employed by Ohio Mutual Insurance in Bucyrus until her retirement in 1984. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline, where she was very active in numerous women's organizations, taught Sunday School and served as secretary until 2005. Most recently Dorothy attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and flower arranging, so much so that she arranged flowers for the Ohio Mutual Insurance Company. She made shadow boxes and would make flower arrangements for family members' weddings. Even at the Carlisle House Dorothy stayed active by delivering the newspapers to the residents.
Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews; Pam (Gene) Marquart, Willard, Teresa (Lou) Casperson, Canal Winchester, Tom (Kathy) Riedel, Canton, GA, Dave (Lori) Riedel, Centreville, VA, great nieces and nephews; Aaron Riedel, Amber (Allon) Sparks, Zac (April) Casperson, Mark Casperson, Brent Riedel, Bryan Riedel, Megan Riedel, brother-in-law; Bill (Joan) Smith, Galion, and sister-in-law, Annabelle Riedel, Bucyrus.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Riedel.
Friends may call Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 10:00 AM until the time of the 11:30 AM funeral service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Hans Scherner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Sulphur Springs.
