Hello. I recently attended the memorial at the HSBC Center in March. I live in Ottawa, Ont., and it was a good 8 hour plus ride. When i first heard of his death I broke down and cried. Fifty Nine is way too young. He was my favorite Sabre in those days, and a few years back he and Rene Robert came to Ottawa for an old timers Alumni game between past Sabres players and Ottawa Senators alumni. Rick looked like he hadn"t lost his touch! I got his autograph. I forget if he scored or not, or who won the game for that matter. His uncle Charlie and my father are cousins. I thought the memorial service was very well done. My thoughts and regards go out to his immediate and extended families. - David Carson- Ottawa,Ont.

Thank you for sharing your husband, father, teammate, and friend with us. His profession and skill gave me childhood memories that will not be forgotten. His kindness will be remembered in this community forever. It is not often that a local celebrity is known at the same time for his skill and his unselfish ways . May his family and friends be in peace knowing he lived his life well and his rewards will be just.

It is not that often that one can say they get to meet their childhood sports hero. It's even more rare to say you have had the opportunity to play golf, have drinks and share conversation with your childhood sports hero. Rico was an approachable, sincere man, who always made time to say hi. He will be missed.
Condolences to his family.

Dear Mikey and boys,
I was saddened to hear of Rick's passing.
My prayers are with you Mikey and know that Rick touched many of our hearts as a friend, hockey player and a very generous man who gave so much to the Buffalo community and never expected anything in return. he never let is fame go to his head, and was always ready to sign an autograph at any time. I can remember when we all worked at Brennan's ( long ago), Rick would be sitting there at the end of the bar and fans would come up to him and ask for his autograph, and he never said no! Always a smile on his face. When I come back in June to visit, lets all get together, Jean Susie and myself.
Stay strong ...
#7 will live forever in our hearts...

Rick's passing makes me think of how much I miss those early days, such a huge part of my young life. From watching him as a kid, to meeting him, to ultimately playing some golf and having a beer with Mr. Martin, he was so much of what a real person, an honest sports celebrity, should be. I'm probably being selfish thinking about how I feel, how I miss those days, when it is his family that really matters now. But what a tribute to a person who touched so many, that we may feel that same way. Goodbye Rico, you were like a close friend to lots of us, even though you didn't know us. And thank you for the great hockey player and even better person that you were. God Bless.

Richard Martin is my all-time favourite hockey player. I was fortunate to see almost every game he played in Vancouver, including the ’77 All Star game, in which he was named MVP. I met him once after a game in Vancouver, January 17, 1975. I was 12, I had made a gift for him, he signed an autograph for me and gave me his game stick…which I still have. When he was traded to LA, it never seemed right to me. When he retired early, I felt badly for him and all the fans…and now to learn of his passing, I am shocked and saddened. It has been wonderful, yet not surprising, for me to read of what a wonderful person and role model he continued to be after his playing days were over. He has given so much to so many for so long. My condolences, prayers and thoughts to the entire Martin family, his friends and fans. Richard Martin is a true legend who will be missed.

I often go to lunch at a local restaurant where Rico visited often. He always was so friendly. He always asked "what's the soup"? He shared conversation with us "regulars" though he was one of us. No one asked for an autograph. He told jokes. and we laughed. But we talked. I had knee surgery and he always asked. . "how is your knee doing? ". When the door opened this week we all look. .. expecting to see Rico with his leather jacket on. . .but we know he is with us. . and we will meet again. Rico. .. we at p's miss you.

I never will forget walking through Memorial Aud after a Sabres game hoping for a glimpse of my "heartthrob" Rick. Then down the aisle he came, I could hardly believe my eyes seeing that wonderful smile. My heart was pounding so hard I could hardly talk. He shook my hand and my husband and I talked with him for several minutes. What a genuinely nice guy. Several years later I had the privilege to meet him again when he (as a co-sponsor of our baseball team) came to one of our baseball games. This time I got his autograph and it is even more treasured now. We were so sad to hear of his passing. Rick, I know you are skating around the angels up there in heaven. I hope that can only give your family some peace during this awful time in their lives.
March 17, 2011

When Terry Pagula bought the Sabres and the French Connection met him on the ice, I was so excited that I froze the frame and took pictures of the TV screen to add to my scrapbook! You see, when I was in high school, we used to rush over to Holiday Twin Rinks after school (maybe even skipping a class or two!) to watch our beloved Sabres practice and perhaps get a picture or an autograph. Rick was always obliging to his fans, even stopping for a picture when someone called his name. I still have that scrapbook and with a very heavy heart, I will be adding that last picture of the French Connection to it. My deepest sympathies go out to my childhood hero's family.

Mr. Martin was an amazing man. He has taught me so many wonderful things that I will always keep with me as I grow older in life. No matter what, he knew how to cheer a person up with his jokes. I am extremely privileged to be able to say that Mr. Martin made a huge impact on my life. Doing fingertip pushups in our kitchen, teaching my brother important life lessons when it comes to golf, and his all around character are some of the most memorable attributes I will remember. And I can't forget the delicious steaks he could make!
I am blessed that I got to personally know Mr. Martin as a family friend. The Kraska family will sincerely miss you Rick, and our hearts go out to the Martin family. We will miss you Rico!

I became a hockey fan because of the French Connection. This was, at the time, a little unusual for a girl of 12ish. My family had two seats in the oranges (waaaaay up) and my siblings and I were always fighting over who was going to the game with Dad when Mom was not going to go. How I idolized the players-thinking they were somehow different from us regular beings. Decades later when I met Rick in the community, I was amazed to find out that he was just like us. We talked about beer! I am a teacher now and Rick is the epitome of what I tell my students a "role model" is. No matter what you do, set an example by doing your best and being kind to everyone you meet along the way. My heartfelt condolences to the Martin family.

My sincerest sympathy and prayers go out to the entire Martin family and friends of. More so then a hockey player, he seemed to be a great member, a true friend and a pillar in our community. When I think of the Sabres in the 70's and the players we had, not only being a fan of the team but there was a feeling that went along with that, inside, that has always stayed with me. I feel selfish in saying that part of my childhood has been lost but my respect for him and the memories we have to hold on to will live forever. ~+~

It is hard to find words to say here..My husband Rick who has been a Sabres fan and season ticket holder from Day 1 and I are heartbroken.During my whole 38 years married to my Rick..The Sabres have been very important in our household. He didn't even miss the game the evening our only child was born at 5:55 pm December 1,1977..he made it to the game and passed out cigars...Rick Martin is one of our sports heros and we will never forget him. I won't tell him to R.I.P. , because I am hoping he will be dancing in the stars when our Sabres win the Cup !!

Always and forever the French Connection will epitomize the Buffalo Sabres. Each time Rick Martin touched the puck you could feel the excitment. Watching him skate was a thing of beauty. Dear Martin family:
No one who ever saw Rick play or watched him mature from a handsome, cocky, sports star into retirement and a kind, charitable, community man, would ever realize that like Jim Kelly; he was even a greater person than he was a hockey player. I met him once with my dad and he graciously signed our stuff and talked with us like he knew us. I wish the sport figures today were more like him. Gentle, and humble with people, always having a kind word, or smile for a fan. God Bless you all and my prayers are with you this week and into the future. Rico you will be sorely missed!

All of my thoughts and prayers go out to Rick's wife and boys, and to ALL of the guys who played with Rick in the early days. My condolences to the family of Rick Martin. The French Connection and the Sabres provided many fond memories of my father and I bonding over hockey. My father has since passed on in 2009 but he left me one keepsake: autographs from the French Connection for which he stood in line for several hours. The guys asked if my dad was going to sell these autographs on e-bay to which my Dad beamed and said no, they are for my daughter. Thanks for giving me those memories. You just never know how little things like that mean alot to others. Rick and of course my father will be missed.

Our condolences to the Martin family. Such fond memories of a fantastic Sabre who was always present on and off the ice. I can remember going to Swiss Chalet on Niagara Falls Blvd and looking across the street at Rico's Trucks & Stuff hoping to see my favorite Sabre. In the 90s I remember working for a local company and Rick had an appointment with my boss and I was so thrilled to meet him as he was such an accomplished businessman. A few summers ago, my husband and I saw Rick and his dog at Antique World outside. I had to laugh as we were looking for those vintage Sabres glasses (Shoenfeld, Korab, Martin, Perreault) and here was the living legend himself, right there, outside. He gave a smile and said hello to all. We thank you for being such a gentleman and for the many happy memories you gave us.

He always had a way to make me smile and always wanted me to take up golf. I will always remeber him saying "one day your going to beat your dad" thats never going to happen!. I am going to miss you dearly and I love you Mr. Martin you were like my second dad. The Martin family, you are in my prayers.
Love you always,
Sabrina Kraska your favorite witch!
