JOHNSTON - Susan Surdam July 31, 2011, beloved wife of Edwin M. Johnston, Jr.; dear mother of Susan Schoellkopf Mele (Bill), J. Frederick Schoellkopf VI (Sandy), Kristin Schoellkopf Borowiak (Paul J. "Buddy") and Olive Abbott "Abby" Schoellkopf; daughter of Susan Fiske Surdam and the late John Lewis Surdam; sister of Lewis J. Surdam (Toni) and Manson C. Surdam (Anne); grandmother of Jacob, Emily, Jack, Krissy and Athena; devoted step-mother of Jennifer Montgomery Johnston, Edwin M. "Tim" Johnston III and Sarah Johnston Mitchell and seven step-grandchildren. Susie drove for Meals-on-Wheels and worked briefly for Osmose, Inc. She was an expert Needle Point Artist and a gourmet cook. She loved traveling, especially many visits with her husband to Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy and the Key West. Most of all, she loved her home. Always upbeat and optimistic, Susie seemed never to possess a "worry gene". She believed in the power of suggestion and teaching by example. Everyone sought her wisdom, kindness and warmth. Her greatest asset, whether she was with family, friends or acquaintances, she had the natural ability to draw out the other person. It was never about herself. Susan was a graduate of The Foxcroft School, attended Pine Manor College and was a member of the Hillsboro Club, Hillsboro Beach, FL. According to her specific wishes a private family service will be held. Please do a random act of kindness. Memorials may be made to Hospice Foundation of WNY, 225 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14227.
