William COOPER Obituary

COOPER - William Y. Prominent and prolific Buffalo painter, printmaker, muralist and art educator extraordinaire William Y. Cooper made his transition to a perpetually sunlit art studio on Friday, February 26, 2016 following a long illness. He was 82. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Cooper began drawing at age four. He studied for two years at Alabama State College before being drafted into the army, where he wrote and illustrated training brochures for the U.S. Army Command in Europe. After discharge he returned to school on the G.I. Bill, and earned his BFA degree from the University at Buffalo. He taught art for 12 years in the Buffalo Public School system, was a regular instructor at Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and always taught and mentored young children out of his studio. For many years, he also owned and operated an African art import business: Self-defined as an "Afrocentric artist," he maintained that affiliation with and study of African art and history was a major influence in his own painting. After closing his shop in 1995 he became an anchor and beloved resident artist of Buffalo Arts Studio. He exhibited throughout Buffalo and New York State, as well as in Alabama, Georgia, Washington, D.C. and Ghana. Like Cooper, his intricate canvases boom with movement and light, at once brilliant and brooding with color and intriguing, meditative form. Among the many sites of his work in Buffalo, his mural graces the Colored Musicians Club Museum in the historic Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. William Y. Cooper leaves behind his loving wife Glendora Johnson-Cooper, Aunt Clarisse Burch, sons Yancy Cooper (Rochelle), Joel Cooper (Kendra) and Juan King; daughter Sharelle Hennigan; grandchildren Erik (Chancel), J.C. (deceased), Jaxon and Christina; and great-grandson Taylor. Visitation hours for Mr. Cooper are Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 11 AM to 1 PM and 4 to 7 PM at THOMAS T. EDWARDS FUNERAL HOME, 995 Genesee Street, Buffalo NY 14211. There will also be a community open house on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 4 to 7 PM in Mr. Cooper's studio at Buffalo Arts Studio, 2495 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14214.

I'm taking a moment today to remember the gifts you gave to our community and the world of art. You are a cultural pioneer providing bold leadership in artistic expression for the voices and traditions of African and African American art that had/has been largely misunderstood and under-appreciated in many years. Your work, your voice, your dedication shifted a lot of uninformed opinions into supporters and advocates for Black art in America and Buffalo in particular. Your image is prominent on our community's Freedom Wall . . . your beautiful, thoughtful, provocative, works of art will never be forgotten. Blessings. Celeste Lawson, Buffalo, NY.

May I extend my sincere prayers to you Mrs. Cooper and your entire family. Many years ago my teenage son Gerald Williams was selling his paintings at an Art festival. Mr. Cooper came up and encouraged him, showing him many pointers. Mr. Cooper couldn't remember my son's name, but when we came to an art show he would always asked how he was doing.
Mr. Cooper encouraged everyone in art, especially the young people in this area.
We will miss his kindness and his beautiful art, especially in this area.
May God carry you through and give you Peace and Comfort at this trying time.

Dear Glen, I always loved being a colleague of yours at the UB Libs, and now I just want to offer my love, my sympathy, and my belief that William Y Cooper, who is now with God, is with you always.

Dear Glendora and the family of William (Bill) Y. Cooper.
Please accept my most deep and sincere condolences. We have lost the presence of a kind and generous soul. But we must also remember Bill for his great genius and talent - his trailblazing work that helped so many of us cultivate our own voices of cultural expression. Dear Babake,
You came into the world to make your special mark, and you did that. That mark can be seen on canvases, and it can be seen on walls of the city of Buffalo. We will always be most grateful though, for the loving mark you left on the canvas of our family's life. The loving mark that inspired my husband Yomi Obidi, to give you the honorable name "Babake" the father/leader of us all. May you rest in peace William Coooper, elder, artist, and friend.
