INDEPENDENCE– Richard L. Shillinglaw, 80, of Independence died Monday morning, July 1, 2013 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Richard was born on June 10, 1933, in Independence the son of Colin M. and Mona K. (McDonald) Shillinglaw. He graduated from the Independence High School, Loras College in Dubuque, and received his Masters of Education in Greeley, Colo. He taught in Wichita, Kan., Ottumwa and Carpenter prior to teaching for the Independence Community Schools until his retirement. During the summers Richard was employed as a Park Ranger at Estes National Park in Colorado.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, The St. Pius 10th Knights of Columbus, The Independence Rotary Club and the Lions Club. He enjoyed flying gliders in his spare time.
He is survived by a brother; Colin M. Shillinglaw, Elk Run Heights; a sister, Colleen (Fred) Smith, Oconomowoc, Wis., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 4, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Thursday and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
