HAZLETON - Alfred J. Michels, 88, of Hazleton, Iowa, died on Tuesday morning, August 10, 2010 at the Buchanan Co. Health Center in Independence.
Mass of Christian Burial was Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Hazleton with Military Graveside Rites by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9.

Alfred James Michels was born on May 24, 1922 at rural Stanley, the son of William E. & Alma Mary (Van Vooren) Michels. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1939 and attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City. Alfred served as a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army during W.W. II. Alfred was united in marriage to Irene Catherine Sachtschale on August 12, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hazleton. He worked at Wapsie Valley Feed Company and then Walnut Grove Products of Independence for 38 ½ years, retiring in 1986.
Alfred is survived by his daughter: Jane (Mike) Green of Bevier, Missouri; one son: Don (Cathy) Michels of Waterloo; four grandchildren: Jim Nabholz of Mayo, Florida, Debra Nabholz of Mayo, Florida, Chris Michels of Fairbank and Philip Michels of Denver; eight great-grandchildren: Carmen, Justin & Joshua Nabholz, Rylee, Carter, Mason, Kiara & Libby Michels and a brother: Raymond (Lorraine) Michels of Stanley.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife: Irene on December 21, 1998.
