LAMONT – Ann Marie Wulfekuhle entered into her eternal rest on Monday, April 18, at the Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha. She was 74 years of age.
Ann was born July 5, 1941, the daughter of Stanley and Berniece VanFossen Sanders at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. She attended Vinton Schools until moving to Lamont in March of 1956. Ann graduated from Lamont High School with the class of 1959. After graduation she worked at Cedar Rapids Electric for four years and then attended and graduated from Paris Beauty Academy in 1963 and worked at Jo's Beauty Salon in Cedar Rapids.
On January 9, 1965 she married Jerry Wulfekuhle at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamont. They were divorced after 15 years, but remained friends through the years. While living in Chicago she worked for Graybar Electric until 1967 when they moved to Miami, Florida. She then worked for National Airlines (a dream job) which became Pan American Airlines, for twenty-two years. Ann worked in the reservations department, spending most of those years working at the rate desk and being an instructor in reservations. She was a graduate of Miami Dade College. Moving back to Lamont in 1989, she worked for the Buchanan County Assessor's office until her retirement in August of 2010.
Ann has served on the Lamont City Council (first woman council person) since January 2, 1992; the Lamont Library Board; served on the Buchanan County Economic Development Committee for many years. She also had a real estate license. She operated Annie's Christmas Tree Farm for many years, was a landlord providing rental homes to area residents, volunteered at the Common Grounds Coffee House every Saturday morning and made waffles for the Kid's Center breakfasts. Ann helped make the dressing for the Masonic-Eastern Star Turkeyfest for over 20 years. She was Assistant Editor with the Lamont Leader since 1998 and Owner since 1998.
Survivors include her home companions "Chandler Bing" and "Grayboy"; sisters: JoLayne (Jack) Weber of Webster City and Victoria (Jeff) Barker of Cedar Rapids; significant other Butch (Roger) Wessels of Lamont; special Aunt Pauline Schirm of Newhall; nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Sanders, Jessica Schultz, Seth Hagerson, Zach Hagerson, Jennifer Criteser, Bobbi , and Eric Barker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and loving brother Steve Sanders.
Memorials will be directed to Lamont Kid's Center, the Lamont Library, and Grace United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, in the Grace United Methodist Church at Lamont with Pastor Allen Craft officiating. Interment in East Oakland Cemetery at Shellsburg, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Lamont and also until service time on Saturday.
