Independence - Betty A. Hatfield-Hedlund, 91, of Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence following a long illness. She was born on Aug. 4, 1918, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Frederick Ford and Nellie Comstalk (Clarke) Hall. She graduated from high school in Mt. Pleasant in 1936. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1940. On May 21, 1942, she and Willard "Bill" Glenn Hatfield were married in Shreveport, La. He preceded her in death in 1988. On Aug. 22, 1992, she and Edward Claire Hedlund were married in Independence. He preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Hatfield-Hedlund was an elementary school teacher. She taught in Winfield, Independence, Iran and Saudi Arabia. She retired in 1985.
Hatfield-Hedlund is survived by two daughters: Susan (Carl) Moushon of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Candace (Thomas) Higgins of Independence; one son, Richard H. (Wanda) Hatfield of Augusta, Ga. and three step-children: Steve (Chris) Hedlund of Iowa City; Edward (Ellen) Hedlund of Upper Saddle River, N.J. and Anne (Earl) Harper of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. Monte Cue, organist, and Mrs. Robert Malek, Jr., vocal soloist. Casket Bearers will be Chris Higgins, Andy Higgins, Dante Estevez, Greg Fountain, Austin Chandonnet, and Larry Oline. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
