INDEPENDENCE - Carolyn R. Nielsen, 83, of Independence, died on Monday, April 4, at her home in Independence of natural causes.
She was born on Oct. 15, 1927, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Christian Shriver and Stella Evelyn (Robertson) Rondestvedt. In 1945, she graduated from the University Of Minnesota High School in Minneapolis, and then earned a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University in Ames in 1949. On June 19, 1949, she and Wilbur Clarence Nielsen were married at the Rondestvedt family home in Minneapolis. Mrs. Nielsen taught at the Jesup High School in Jesup for two years. Later she was a quality assurance worker at Wapsie Valley Creamery in Independence for 15 years. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence for 61 years, serving on church council, the pastor nominating committee, teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes, and supporting her church circle and quilting club. She served as Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was a Girl Scout Leader, PEO Chapter BD, and the Ladies Literary Guild and the Red Hat Society have all benefited from her involvement over the years.
Mrs. Nielsen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wilbur; two sons: Mark (Donna) Nielsen, Independence, and David (Mary) Nielsen, Atlanta, Ga.; and a daughter, Diane (Roy) Evans, Eagle Pass, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, a great grandson, and a brother, Christian (Peg) Rondestvedt, Wilmington, Del.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Marcia, in infancy, a grandson, and a brother, David Rondestvedt.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, April 7, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence.
