INDEPENDENCE – Charles J. Butterfield, 79, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday evening, March 30, 2016 at Lexington Estate, Independence.
Charles was born on March 19, 1937 near Troy Mills, Iowa the son of Lawrence W. and Mildred F. (McGrath) Butterfield. He was a 1954 graduate of the Rowley High School, Rowley, Iowa. On May 26, 1956 he was married to Kathryn M. Kaesser in St. John's Catholic Church, Independence. Charles was employed as a mechanic with the Kaesser John Deere Dealership near Rowley for several years prior to farming for 40 years near Walker, Iowa. The couple moved into Independence in 2004.
He enjoyed coaching little league, but his true loves were his family and farming.
Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years Kathryn Butterfield; three children: Gary L Butterfield of Walker, Denise (John) Laing of Jacksonville, Fla., and Scott (Shari) Butterfield of Solon, Iowa; four grandchildren: Bryan Nelson, Brandon and Brenton Laing, and Kathryn Butterfield; a great granddaughter, Brea Nelson; and a sister, Kathryn Marks of Wilton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis Polk; and a brother, Larry Butterfield.
Private services will be held at a later date. The Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory of Independence is assisting the family with arrangements.
