INDEPENDENCE – Dale (Butch) Elliott, 84, formerly of Independence, died June 9, at Tidwell Hospice, Sarasota, Fla.
Dale was born October 30,1927 in Independence, the son of Mae (Moore) and James B. Elliott.
He was a 1945 graduate of Independence High School, and was President of his class. Upon graduation he entered the Navy, serving on the destroyer Fresno, and then on the carrier USS Essex during the Korean War.
In 1955, Dale married Independence native, Carolyn Gee. They later divorced. For the next 15 years he delivered and raced boats between Ft. Lauderdale and the Bahamas, along with charter fishing. Most of this time he was employed by the Chrysler Marine Division, retiring from Chrysler in 1987. This same year he married Juanita (Miller) Stevenson, a 1946 graduate of I.H.S.
During their residence in Homosassa, Fla. and Venice, Fla., they sent much of their time fishing and boating. Their volunteer work included managing and operating a retail store to fund the Loveland Center; search and rescue with the Coast Guard Auxiliary; and assisting in wildlife rescue at a wild life park.
Dale is survived by his wife, Juanita, Venice, Fla.; former wife, Carolyn (Gee) Brown, Ft. Myers, Fla.; son, James (Sue) Elliott, Tempe, Ariz.; daughters Missy (Dennis) Stonebreaker, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Susan (John) Somers, Garrett, Ind.; grandson, Jaron; granddaughters Kati, Krista, Abby, and Emily; step-sons Richard R. and Thomas G. Stephenson; and stepdaughter, Tess Stephenson, all of Venice, Fla.
Dale wished to be cremated and have his ashes spread over the Gulf of Mexico.
