WINTHROP – David E. Steinkamp, 69, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City.
David was born July 8, 1944, in Quantico, Virginia (U.S. Marine Corps Base), to Frederick "Curly" and Dorothy (Wright) Steinkamp. He was raised in Charles City and earned his B.A. in Physical Education at the University of Northern Iowa. David married Marilyn (Brown) Steinkamp on May 1, 1971.
David, or "Steiny" as most affectionately called him, spent the next 33 years of teaching and coaching in the East Buchanan Community School District. He taught physical education, coached wrestling, football and track and touched the lives of every one of his students.
David was a successful wrestling coach. In his 32 years of coaching, he had many accomplishments which he attributed to the dedicated young men he coached and mentored. He was named Iowa High School Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1993. In 1998, David was inducted into the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame followed by his induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001. He coached 78 state qualifiers (35 of these young men placed) and 4 state champions. He and his wrestlers earned 16 Tri-Rivers Conference titles (his son, Will, being one of his four-time conference champions). David was a past president of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. At the end of his 2001 wrestling season, David's coaching record was 312-112-8. He was most proud of his many former wrestlers who chose to be mat coaches and officials.
There wasn't a life David didn't influence. Whether it was his encouraging words, laughter, smile or an occasional hug, he touched the hearts of everyone he met.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn of Winthrop; two children, Deb (Jason) Donlea of Winthrop and Will (Beth) of Urbana; four grandchildren, Olivia, Lauren, Cael and Caden; one brother Tom (Michelle) of Belvidere, Ill.; his mother Dorothy of Rockford, Ill.; one brother-in-law Nile (Marie) of Robins; seven nieces and one nephew.
