WINTHROP – Delbert Dean Thompson was born July 1, 1955 at Independence, Iowa the son of Glen and Gwendolyn Long Thompson. The family lived in the Aurora area until moving to Winthrop. Delbert graduated from East Buchanan High School with the class of 1973.
Delbert was united in marriage to Kenda Kay Kurtz on June 18, 1977 at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop. To this union were born two children: Candace and Mitchell. Delbert worked for Wieland and Sons Lumber Company for the past 27 years and was currently Sales Manager. He loved motocross, hunting, and riding his Harley. He especially loved working on the motorbike trail.
Delbert died suddenly at his home on Friday, Dec. 23, 2011 at the age of 56.
He leaves his wife Kenda of Winthrop, his son Mitchell and grandson Preston of Independence; special family friend Brittany Thompson of Cedar Rapids; his daughter Candace (Brad) Wurster of Spencer; his sister Shirley (Darrell) Carpenter of Troy Mills; mother in law Carol Kurtz of Independence; and father in law William "Bill" Kurtz and friend Mary of Winthrop; other relatives and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his sister Joyce Nelson, and his sister in law Lurinda Kurtz.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 in the Church of Christ United with Pastor Ginny Bass officiating. Music provided by Tom Severson. Casketbearers will be: Jake Jacobs, Collin Whitney, Eric Greenwood, Don Gudenkauf, Peter Solberg, Bryan Cox, Emil Tisl and Nick Gudenkauf. Honorary Bearers will be: Brian Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Darrin Carpenter, John Carpenter, Ted Wieland, Dean Wieland, Jeff Wieland, Gerold Kelly, Keith Roberts, Rod McGraw, Brad Cusick, and Judy O'Brien. Interment will be in Fremont Cemetery north of Winthrop. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.28, 2011 at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church.
